Michael and his wife Catharina Dorothea (also born Merkle) were married September 5, 1820 in Finsterrot. Together they had 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. 3 of the children emigrated to the United States during the 1850's. Michael, Catharina, and one daughter ("Elizabeth") arrived in New York on June 3, 1857 on the ship Patrick Henry. Elizabeth settled with her brothers George Carl and Jacob Albrecht in Berrien County, Michigan. There is no trace of what happened to the parents. They likely died somewhere between New York and Ohio/Michigan between 1857 and 1860.

Note: upon emigration, all children changed their names to Markley.
