Alexander, 1.Fürst von Dietrichstein zu Nikolsburg, was the son of Emmanuel, Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly, and his wife, Princess Sophie of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Through his mother, he was a first cousin of Queen Victoria; her consort, Prince Albert, and Ferdinand II, of Portugal; in addition to being a nephew of Leopold I, King of the Belgians. He married in Vienna on April 28, 1857 to an heiress, Alexandrine Marie, Gräfin von Dietrichstein-Proskau und Leslie, by whom he had three children.

An Austrian general and diplomat, he served two years as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1864–66) and one month's service as Minister-President of Austria.
