He was the second son of Emmanuel, Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly, and his wife, Princess Sophie of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. He was married on July 23, 1843 in Vienna to Gräfin Therese Rosa Franziska von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie and following her death in 1856 was married on May 31, 1862 in Vienna to Gräfin Maria Theresia Charlotte von Lamberg .
