Maxine Cook Clayton, age 98, of Lubbock, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. Maxine was born March 2, in Stockdale, Texas. She was the oldest child and only daughter of James Henry and Bessie Neal Cook. Her father, was a teacher. They moved to several small town schools before moving to rural community of School Land (seven miles from Nixon Texas). She attended a three room school in School Land where her father taught until 1937 and then attended Nixon High School graduating in 1938. She attended Southwest Texas Teachers College in San Marcos Texas for one year. However, Maxine’s mother died in May as Maxine was finishing her first year of college, so she stayed home to help her father with raising her two brothers, Neal and Norman.

She met Harold Clayton through a college roommate. They married on April 18, 1947 at First Baptist Church of Nixon. They had three sons, Glenn, Bruce and Allan and lived in Rosenberg until 1969 before moving to Pecos, TX. During those years of raising a family, Maxine made a career in Bookkeeping and worked for several agencies as well as Lamar Consolidated ISD in Rosenberg and Foster Farms in Pecos, TX. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls, peach cobbler, fried chicken, creamed ham and peanut brittle.

Maxine and Harold retired to Lubbock in 1984. In her retirement years, Maxine worked as a Hospital Volunteer for Reeves County in Pecos, TX and Highland Hospital here in Lubbock. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Lubbock and loved her Sunday School class, choir and WMU. She loved Jesus Christ, her church, and was special to many.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, James Henry and Bessie Neal Cook; her husband Harold Robert Clayton; her brother Neal Cook; her son Bruce H Clayton; and her granddaughter, Amy Celeste Clayton.

She is survived by her brother, Norman Cook and his spouse Dolores Cook of Longmont, CO; son, Glenn H.
