After graduating from Stanford University in 1963, she moved to New York City. There she began her career as a copy editor of Vogue magazine. She became managing editor at Mademoiselle in 1976. She was later hired by Rupert Murdoch to launch Elle magazine in the United States. She turned the French publication into a popular American magazine that won national awards for design and general excellence. In the late 1980's she became president of Clinque Laboratories Inc., an Estee Lauder owned company. She helped the company develop many new products, including chemical-free sunblocks and make-ups for varying skin types. She also made improvements to the emerging men's line of cosmetics.
Karen held positions on numerous boards of directors, including the Oregon Symphony, Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum, and Athena Medical.
In January 1994, she married William D. Rutherford, a former Oregon state treasurer.
Karen was diagnosed in 2004 with ovarian mullerian cancer. She was quoted as saying, "I'm not battling cancer. I'm living with cancer, I'm not dying of it.". She died Monday, Dec. 27th at her winter home in Palm Springs, CA. She was 70.
