The McClain family has been described as one of the old established families of America. They were of Scotch-Irish extraction and were located in New England and eastern states in the colonial days. The family has been identified with the colonization period and fought in the early wars of the country, including the American Revolution.

John McClain was born in Pennsylvania in 1803. He married Elizabeth Mauller c1824, migrated to Perry Co, OH, then to Grant Co, IN in 1846.
The family settled near the village of Slash, later called Normal (now gone), near Point Isabel.
