GEORGE P. HAGEN DIED on SUNDAY, NOV. 19TH

George P. Hagen, resident of the community since 1873, passed away Sunday, November 19th at his home, following a paralytic stroke on Oct. 30th. He had reached the age of 71 years, 9 months and 24 days.

He was born March 25, 1862 at Gulbransdalen, Norway, his parents coming to America when he was 7 years of age. They settled first in Salem township, where they lived a number of years, moving to Hayfield township in 1873. Mr. Hagen received his education at the public schools and at the Wasioja Seminary.

He was married to Miss Gertrude Baken in 1894 and four children were born to them, all of who survive, They are:
Mrs. Ralph Lewis ( Prudence), of Waltham; Mrs. Lloyd LaBelle (Blanche), of St. Paul; Mrs. Cole Mathison (Judith), of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Malcolm Truman (Dorothy), of St. Paul. Mrs. Hagen passed away in 1907.

On July 20th, 1910 Mr. Hagen was married again, this time to Miss Elizabeth Peterson, who with three sons and two daughters survive him. The children are: Mrs. Marvin Ziemer (Harriet), of Alma, Wis.; Mrs. Ben Flood (Alice), of St. Paul; George of Eldora, Iowa; Rolland and Victor, at home. There are eleven grandchildren.

Four sisters and one brother survive, who are: Mrs. Kari Boe and Mrs. Chas. Peterson, of Hayfield; Mrs. Mary Holen, of Hopkins, Minn; Mrs. Lena Baken, of Long Prairie, Minn; Peter Hagen, of Cadigan, Alberta.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at the home and at Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. R. A. Johnson officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, with Messrs. Co.O. Giere, Amund Stranden, L.N. Gilderhus, S.W. Hanson, J.H. Myster and T.M. Bjaastad as pallbearers. Many beautiful floral offerings and offerings to church benefactions in honor of the departed attested to the high esteem in which he was held in the community in which he made his home for 60 years. Business places of the village were closed during the hour of the funeral as a further mark of respect.

Mr. Hagen saw Hayfield grow from a bare prairie to the present well built modern little city. He was chosen to be the first village recorder when the village was incorporated in 1896, operating a general store until appointd postmaster in 1894, in which capacity he served for 21 years.

He was active in church work, beng a member of the Cedar Creek Lutheran church until affiliating with Trinity Lutheran church, following the consolidation of the village Lutheran churches some years ago. He acted as superintendent of the Sunday school over a period of 41 years, and was honorary superintendent for two years. For 16 years he was custodian and janitor of the Hayfield public schools.

Mr. Hagen was kindly & considerate in his dealings with his fellow men, as well as being scrupulously honest. During his long residence in this community he became widely acquainted over this territory, numbering his friends by the hundreds, to who the news of his death will come with a deep sense of personal loss. The sincere sympathy of the entire village and surrounding country goes out to the stricken widow and children in their hour of darkest sorrow.
