A retired Santa Fe Railway employee, John G. Schiffelbein, 71, 4008 W. 23rd, collapsed after mowing his yard Monday and was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. He was born April 21, 1900 in Topeka.

He spent his early life in Ness City but has lived the past 42 years in Topeka. He retired as an employee of the machine shop of the Santa Fe Railway in 1965 after 28 years service. Mr. Schiffelbein was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include his widow, Barbara, of the home; four sons, John Schiffelbein, 802 Eastgate Drive, and James Schiffelbein, 1817 Eastgate Drive, and Michael Schiffelbein, 4109 W. 34th; five daughters, Mrs. Vera Long, 2320 Seabrook, Mrs. Rita Yustick, 2323 Belle, Mrs. Barbara Seibert, 1827 Wayne, Mrs. Lucille Franks, Wichita, and Mrs. Margaret Ann Sheern, Marysville; a brother, John P. Schiffelbein, Garden City; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Pfifer, Victoria; Mrs. Connie Deghand, 529 Emmett; Mrs. Lena Mauer, 707 Freeman, Mrs. Barbara Besier, 607 Grattan, and 26 grandchildren.

Services are pending at Brennan Funeral Home.
