WALTER'S OBITUARY
Walter Odies Barnes, age 88 of Petersburg, WV, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020 at his residence. He was born on August 30, 1931, in Washington, DC, the son of the late Elmer James Barnes and Anna Virginia (Boley) Chapel. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Vera “Ditty” (Carlisle) Barnes, on March 11, 2013.

Mr. Barnes attended First Baptist Church of Petersurg and was a member of the Golden Lanes men’s bowling league in Petersburg. He was an employee of Monarch Mills grocery store in Petersburg for many years before retiring from Wiechart’s Real Estate Agency. Walter truly loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching game shows and playing with his toys. He was quoted as saying he “was never too old to play”.

Mr. Barnes is survived by: 3 daughters, Charlene “Chickie” Godish and husband, Ed, of Petersburg, Virginia Barnes Kesner of Petersburg and Theresa Saunders and husband, Robert, of Petersburg; 1 son, Walter J. Barnes and wife, Sarah, of Moorefield, WV; 1 brother, Elmer James Barnes, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Barnes is preceded in death by: 1 son, Richard “Buddy” Moore, Jr.; 1 daughter, Dharlene Rushing and 1 sister, Mary Fuggit.

There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 1:00PM at the Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville, WV with Rev. Larry Hakes officiating.
