Early on, Sam held a position with Johnson & Johnson in New Jersey, a time of his life about which he repeatedly shared fond memories. After children began to arrive, he and Mary Alice relocated to be near her family on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. He had a career in real estate in the Chattanooga area until moving to Panama City Beach, Florida, in the early ’80s, where he taught in the Florida school system until his official retirement nearly two decades later. Sam was a life-long learner of sorts and spent much of his free time exploring the many facets of various religions. More than anything, he loved to share his theological knowledge with those around him.
Sam is survived by his four children, Laura Edwards (Steve) of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, Alice Holley (Tad) of Gallatin, Tennessee, Katherine Weinmann (Jason) of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Sam Chambers, Jr. (Susan) of Montgomery, Alabama; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, Edgar Chambers, Jr. and Laura Candler Chambers; his older brother Edgar Chambers III; and his wife, Mary Alice Chambers.
He will be laid to rest next to his mother at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia, once Covid-19 restrictions are eased to allow a gathering of more than ten people.
