Residence: Bath County VA.; 5'10", light complexion, grey eyes, light hair.
Enlisted on 4/9/1862 at Shenandoah Mountain, VA., he was mustered into Company K, 52nd Virginia Infantry, as a Private.

Promoted 5/1862 to Orderly Sergeant.
Elected 1st Lieut 9/22/1862.
Signed Jan & Feb 1863 Roll as in Command of Company.
Promoted to Captain 2/23/1863.
Wounded In Action (right hand) 5/12/1864 in Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.
Wounded In Action, POW 9/19/1864 in 3rd Battle of Winchester, VA.; confined 9/24/1864 in Fort Delaware, DE.; Oath of allegiance, released there 6/15/1865.

The 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized at Staunton, Virginia, in August, 1861. Many of its members were from Augusta County. It fought at Greenbrier River and Camp Alleghany, and later in Jackson's Valley Campaign. It participated in various conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, marched with Early to the Shenandoah Valley, and was active around Appomattox. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 7 officers and 53 men of which 14 were armed.

- Death of W. R. Gillett -
W.R. Gillett died at his home near Star Chapel, Friday, February 2nd, aged 85 years, 7 months and 22 days.
The funeral services, conducted by the Rev. C.E.N. Hall, assisted by Rev B.L. Wood, were held in Star Chapel Church Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock and his body was laid to rest in the Cleek Cemetery.
Mr. Gillett is survived by two children: J. Ed. Gillett and Mrs. John Cleek, both of Star Chapel; four brothers: Daniel and Thomas Gillett, of Whitewright, Tex.; Andrew G. Gillett, of Flood, Va.; and James Gillett, of Star Chapel; and two sisters: Mrs. Cleek, of Whitewright, and Mrs. Gwin, of Gassaway, W. Va.
His wife preceded him to the grave by about two years.
