Ukranian fighter pilot for the Soviet Union who was selected in 1960 to begin training as a cosmonaut. However, he was tragically killed by a pure-oxygen-fueled fire during a training mission in 1961. His death was concealed by the Soviet government until 1980.

In June of 1961 he was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Star.

Bondarenko Crater on the far side of the Moon is named in his honor.
