Nellie Lucille Callahan, 78, Nyssa, passed away Dec. 6, 1999, at home...

Nellie was born Oct. 28, 1921, in North Platte, Neb., the daughter of Fred and Nellie Lister Jackson. She was raised on a ranch north of town and graduated from North Platte High School in 1939.

She married Robert W. Callahan in March of 1944, and was a war wife, following him from camp to camp as much as possible. Their first son was born on Oct. 17, 1944, in Utah, and on May 26, 1948, a second son was born in Caldwell. In 1951, they moved to the Big Bend area, south of Adrian, where a daughter was born Oct. 9, 1951.

Nellie worked at Ore-Ida Foods for three years. On Oct. 16, 1960, a third son was born. She began working for the Gate City Journal as a typesetter from 1971 to 1990. In 1992, they sold their ranch and moved to Nyssa. She played guitar and sang with the fiddlers for four years.

Nellie was preceded in death by her first son, Robert, in 1972.

She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Callahan, of Nyssa; two sons, Philip Alan Callahan and Alex Loren Callahan, both of Nyssa; a daughter, Nancy Carol York, of Payette, Idaho; two grandsons and six granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence Jackson of Norfolk, Kan., Loren Jackson of Hershey, Neb., and John Jackson of Rushville, Neb., and two sisters, Dorothy Hodo of LeHarpe, Kan., and Marie Stevenson of Tryon, Neb.
