Maria was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Irish parents Myria Elizabeth Deacon and Michael Degnan in 1842. She was the oldest of seven known siblings. Maria is buried in the same plot with her brothers Francis "Frank" Degnan and John Degnan and her nephew Frank Degnan, Junior. She never married. She was living with her nephew Frank in Dyersville in 1905 and is thought to have helped raise him. She spent some time in Chicago working as a Cigar dealer per the 1900 census, her brother Frank lived in Chicago at that time also and her nephew Frank is thought to have lived there about that time before his death in 1913. She otherwise had worked as a housekeeper for private families in the Dubuque area and had been residing in Dyersville at the time of her death but died at St. Anthony's Home in Dubuque at age 92 years of senility and general atria-sclerosis.
