5621 Private A Whiteside, 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Sailed for South Africa and the Second Anglo Boer War with his battalion on the Oriental on 22 Oct 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 13 Nov 1899. They were sent on to Durban and were part of the 6th Brigade under Major General Barton. He fought at Colenso and took part in other operations in Natal. In Apr 1900 his brigade was sent to the Cape and concentrated at Kimberley. He was probably at the battle of Rooidam on 5 May 1900. He died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the Masonic Temple, Kimberley aged 21 years. He is also commemorated on the Royal Welsh Fusiliers Boer War Memorial in St Giles Parish Church in the centre of Wrexham, Wales.
