The ship he commanded, USS Joseph Hewes (AP 50), was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in Fedala Roads off French Morocco during the Naval Battle of Casablanca.

He was the son of Robert L. Smith Sr. and Mary Loose Smith Howard.
On September 6, 1925, he married Helen Scott Mason at St. John's Episcopal Church at Hagerstown, Maryland. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Dr. Walter Byron Stehl.
They were the parents of three children.
