Obituary for Carol Maureen Hawley

Carol Maureen Hawley, age 84, of Fremont, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020, in Indianola surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on Monday, July 15, 1935 in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Jasper E. and Ora Mae (Miller) Smith. She attended the Ollie High School and graduated with the Class of 1953. On July 19, 1957 she was united in marriage to Leon Hawley at the Friends Church in Richland, Iowa. To this union, 3 children were born, Felice, Bart and Troy.

She and Leon moved to Colorado where Carol ran a daycare in Boulder, Colorado and later Longmont for 28 years.

They moved back to Iowa in 1994 and lived in Ottumwa for a time before moving to Fremont in 1997. She was a member of the Gateway Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa. Carol enjoyed making cards, crafts, knitting, crocheting, gardening, reading, baking and cooking. Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Her family includes her husband, Leon Hawley of Fremont; her 3 children, Felice (Charlie) Foster of Longmont, CO, Bart (Michelle) Hawley of Indianola, and Troy (Tricia) Hawley of Hedrick; her grandchildren, Melissa (Ben) Penfold and Hannah Foster all of Longmont, CO, Kimberly Hawley of Indianola, Rebecca Hawley of Hedrick and Andrew (Megan) Hawley of Bondurant; a great grandchild, Briggs Penfold of Longmont, CO, a sister, Joyce Yoder of Richland and a brother, Norman (Libby) Smith of Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her 2 brothers, Wayne Smith and Lynn Smith and 1 sister Irene Johnson.

A graveside service for Carol will be held on Friday, May 1, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. in the Richland Friends Cemetery near Richland, Iowa, with Pastor Darren Melton officiating. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family to be decided at a later date.
