William Henry Downes was the son of William Downes (1787 - 1839) and Matilda Hardcastle (1796 - 1876), residents of Queen Anne's County, Maryland. He was a prominent citizen of Caroline County, Maryland for many years. In 1856 he purchased the historic property "Stratton" near Centreville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland and lived there until his death in 1867. This property was left to his children according to his will. In 1884 son Eldridge Downes bought the interests of his siblings and upon his death, Stratton passed to his wife, Mary C. Downes. Stratton was built about 1790 and remained in the Downes family until 2000.
