Marine Bernard Foster died at the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, British Liberation Army, Germany, on the 1st May 1945 of wounds received on the 29th April 1945.
Extract from the Middlesex Chronicle Saturday 2nd June 1945:
The 3rd Cadet Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers (Hounslow's Own) mourn the loss on active service of another respected N.C.0., Marine Commando Bernard Foster, of 4, Layton Road, Hounslow. He was badly wounded on April 29th and died on May Ist.
Lieut.-Col. T. H. Bisgood, the cadets' commanding officer, writes: —
"Bernard Foster was born in Hounslow; went to Chiswick County and other schools, and would have been 21, years old in a few days had he lived. One of his brothers is a sergeant in Scotland; another is in the R.A.F. in Malta, and the youngest one is in the Hounslow Cadets. His two older brothers being married, Bernard was the main support of his mother, and his loss is a serious and grievous matter for her. Bernard was a sergeant drummer in the Hounslow Cadets. He was very popular, a deep thinker and somewhat of a bookworm. He was employed by me and was custodian for some time of the Cadet Hall and Club and would, in fact, have returned to continue his employment with me. I have been asked by Mrs. Foster to thank, through the 'Middlesex Chronicle,' the many kind friends who have written to her, and I am to say that all ranks of the 3rd C.B. The Royal Fusiliers (Hounslow's Own) mourn with his mother in her sad bereavement."
