He married Sarah Malissa Neal on October 7, 1858 and she died June 30, 1878, then he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Farley on February 13, 1879. They had one daughter: Nora Ellen Howard.
Lizzie is said to be buried in a cemetery in the Northeast part of St. Joseph, as per her granddaughter. There was a real bad snow storm and the wagons couldn't make it to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Savannah.
The cause of death was cancer of the neck.
