Ronald C. Metzger, 79, of Carolina Village, Hendersonville, NC, died on January 28, 2019.

Ron was born in Sabetha, KS, one of ten children, to the late Philip and Bertha Metzger. Ron and his wife of 54 years, Sherrill “Sherri” Metzger, have resided in Henderson County since 1974, and here they raised their only child, Emily. Ron served our country as a Medic in the US Army.

Although Ron never completed high school, he went on to earn degrees from Kansas State University and University of Kansas, and completed post-graduate work at UNC – Chapel Hill, and at the Staff College of the National Institute of Mental Health in mental health administration. He joined two other staffers in a small local mental health clinic in 1974, and as executive director, developed that clinic into a comprehensive mental health agency, Trend Mental Health, with 250 employees. Ron retired from Trend Mental Health in 1997. He also served in various leadership capacities throughout the state’s mental health arena. After retiring from Trend, he went on to join his wife’s side in real estate at Beverly-Hanks and Associates for 11 years. Ron was a proud member of Rotary for 40 years, served on the board of the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce, and served on numerous other local boards throughout his life.

Ron’s greatest joys in life included baking cookies, searching for wildflowers and birds on local trails, traveling abroad, playing a good game, and spending time with his family.

Ron will be deeply missed by his little family. He is survived by his wife Sherri; and his daughter Emily and her husband Mark Freeman; and a granddaughter Kinley Freeman.

The family expresses deepest gratitude to the staff of Carolina Village for their loving care of Ron. Dr. Peggy Noel of Memory Care will forever remain in our hearts for her tireless compassion.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville with Reverend Dr. Mark Walls officiating.
