Lydia was a daughter of Abraham D. and Mary Shoemaker. She grew up in Waterloo Township, southwest of what was then the town of Berlin (now Kitchener), where her father operated a sawmill.

A birth record reveals that Lydia had a son born out of wedlock on October 14, 1869. The child is unnamed in the document. The 1871 Census of Canada finds Lydia living in Galt, Ontario, with Catherine Wick (age 91 years) and Dilman Snyder (age 1), likely her son. Lydia was employed as a "servant."

Other records relating to Lydia's first-born son could not be found.

Lydia married John Hearth (1842-?) on February 27, 1877, in Berlin, Ontario. John Hearth was the son of Egedius Hearth (1820-?) and Theresa Hearth (1824-?). The couple lived in Waterloo Township until about 1800, and then moved to Wilmot Township. They had five known children:
- Abraham (1878-1949)
- Mary Magdalena (1880-1903)
- Simon Peter (1882-1944)
- Ida Minerva (1884-?)
- Edwin (1886-1973)

Lydia died on November 27, 1905, at the age of 59 years. She was buried beside her daughter, Mary, who died two years earlier.

The death date and burial location of John Hearth are unknown.
