Menno was a son of Abraham D. and Mary Shoemaker. He grew up in Waterloo Township, southwest of what was then the town of Berlin (now Kitchener), where his father operated a sawmill.

Menno married Esther Shantz on November 29, 1870, in Berlin, Ontario. Menno was a carpenter. Census data (1881, 1891, 1901, 1911) show that Menno and his family lived in Berlin. The couple had seven children:
- Samuel Allen (1872-1893)
- Rebecca Mary (1874-1936)
- Clara (1877-1954)
- Emma Lorraine (1880-1951)
- Harvey (1887-1942)
- Olive Esther (1898-1965)

The 1921 census shows that Menno was living at the Waterloo County House of Industry and Refuge, a Kitchener residence for people needing shelter, food and/or other support. At this time, Esther was residing with her son and daughter-in-law, Harvey and Mabel Shoemaker, in Kitchener.

Menno died at the House of Refuge and Industry on August 18, 1924. A record shows the cause of death as "senile debility with blindness."
