The 1921 census shows that Menno was living at the Waterloo County House of Industry and Refuge, a Kitchener residence for people needing shelter, food and/or other support. At this time, Esther was residing with her son and daughter-in-law, Harvey and Mabel Shoemaker, in Kitchener.
Menno died at the House of Refuge and Industry on August 18, 1924. A record shows the cause of death as "senile debility with blindness."

Gravesite Details
The gravestone is inscribed with a Woodmen of the World emblem. From 1900 to the mid-1920s, WOW life insurance policies had an agreement to provide grave markers to members who purchased a $100 rider to cover the cost of the monument.
