Roy Davies - A lifelong Ingersoll resident, who was born on Thursday, July 27, 1922, died on Monday, October 4, 2010, in University Hospital, London. He was the son of the late George (1944) and Julia Wheeler (1986) Davies of 157 Whiting Street and he was predeceased by his three siblings Joyce (Earl Clark) in 2005, June (John Bone) in 1968 and Harry “Bud” (Lorna Farr) in 1990. He attended Victory Memorial School and Ingersoll Collegiate between 1927 and 1938. During World War II, he enlisted at Wolseley Barracks on July 26, 1942 and served in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps. He went to England in July 1943 and to France three days after D-Day. Upon returning home in 1945, he enrolled in a pre-trades training course in London and chose to study plumbing. He apprenticed with J. N. Henderson at 24 Charles Street W., starting in April 1947. He went on to attain 3 certificates of qualification in the trades of Plumber, Sheet Metal Worker and Gas Fitter. He helped to train many of Oxford County’s future tradesmen up until he retired in 1991. He met Violet Bach at her brother’s restaurant, “The Aragon” where she was working as a waitress. They were married on June 17, 1950, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Four months ago, on June 12, 2010, they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at an Open House at the Ingersoll Senior’s Center. He was the beloved father of 4 children: Deborah (Steve Johnston), Charles “Chuck” (1956-2009), Darlene (John Franchetto) and Paul (Ann Simms). He was the cherished grandfather of Spencer (Laura), Deirdre (Jaret), Kyle (Allison), Skyler, and Kevin (Nicole). His four adored great-granddaughters Emerald, Marisa, Jetara and Victoria will miss their visits with “Pop”. He will also be missed by two step-grandchildren Josh (Angela, and their son Hogan St. Pierre) and Joel St. Pierre. In May 1969, Roy bought the plumbing and heating business where he had worked for 22 years. He served the Ingersoll area expertly, fairly and honestly for the next 22 years. He continued training future journeymen, especially his daughter Debbie and later, his son Paul. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church since childhood and he served on the Board of Managers in the 60’s and 70’s. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1970 at the Beachville branch, then in Ingersoll. He contributed many hours at Chuck’s Community Living group home in London, fixing whatever needed repairing and he enjoyed volunteering with his fellow veterans from Parkwood Hospital. In his retirement he became adept at woodworking; crafting coffee and end tables, step stools, potato bins, lazy susans and various other items from pieces of pine, cherry, oak and maple. He was essentially a teacher throughout his long life, educating by loving example and by demonstrating life experiences, first to his children and then his grandchildren. His long, joyously happy marriage will stand as a testament to his abundant love. His funeral service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Lonnie Atkinson on Friday October 8 at St. Paul’s with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 119 colour party participating. His ashes were laid to rest in the Davies family plot at Ingersoll Rural Cemetery.
