Mrs. Paul Gering, Pioneer Matron Passes Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. Paul Gering, who died Saturday evening at her home after a brief illness, were conducted from the Mennonite church near Schragg Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. M. E. Moser of Spokane officiating. Burial was in the Mennonite cemetery.
Matilda Alberta Steffen was born April 1, 1885, in Protowka, Russia. She came to the United States when only 3 years old, her parents settling first in California. In 1882 they came to Oregon and in 1899 they migrated to Adams county with the Mennonite Emigrant train. With the exception of about 15 years spent in Southern Idaho, she spent all her life after that time in this community. She was married April 5, 1905, to Paul Gering.
She is survived by her widower, three sons, Adam Walter of this community, Jonathan of Moscow, Ida., and Aaron, Kalispell, Mont.; four daughters, Mrs. Alberta Nickel of Everett, Wash., Mrs. Lillian Kison of this community, and the Misses Larena and Lavina Gering of Spokane; one sister, Mrs. Ernest Hardt of Schragg; three brothers, Edward, Herbert and Walter Steffen, all of Schragg, and six grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Haight Funeral home.
Music was furnished by the Mennonite men's quartet and pallbearers were John Jantz, Andrew Jantz, J. M. Schrag, Emil Schrag, C. P. Nightengale and Adolph Graber. She was 61 years, 11 months and 14 days old.
