Dilman (Tilman) was one of five children born to Ephraim and Hannah Shantz. According to a cemetery record, he lived for only two days. Dilman is buried near the grave of his sister, Adina.

About 1895, Ephraim, Hannah, and their three children, Bert, Selina, and Elsie, moved from Waterloo Township, Ontario, to the Didsbury, Alberta, area.
