John Jairus Goodner was the third child of Jacob and Charlotte (Kemp) Goodner. He was a farmer. He removed from Bradley County, Tenn. where he was living, to Hamilton County, Tenn., shortly after the close of the Civil War, and settled 20 miles north of Chattanooga at Savannah. He owned several farms, and donated the land for the Walnut Grove M.E. Church, which was near his homestead. He married first Martha Ellen (Bean) on 9-3-1857. Martha Ellen was daughter of Hazard Bean, a pioneer settler in Bradley County. John Jairus Goodner married second Laura Million, nee Howell, on 5-2-1901. She died 7-2-1928. No issue by this marriage.
