Murlyne “Murl” Wheeler Banks was born in Shelby County, Texas to Odis Arlington and Jessie Lee Bridges Wheeler on July 6, 1925. She graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1943. Murl married the love of her life, Carl William Banks on April 2, 1949 until his death in 1992. She passed away on April 9, 2020 at the age of 94 years, only 3 months short of her 95th birthday.

Murl was the oldest surviving and matriarch of a large and loving family of nine siblings. She is survived by her brothers, Wayne Wheeler, Raymond “Ray” Wheeler and wife, Joann, sister, Verleen Wheeler Veale and husband Tom, and sister in law Ethyl Wheeler. She was preceded in death, by her brothers and sisters in law, Gilbert and wife Maxine, Waylon and wife Edith, Robert and wife Margie, Odis, sister, Geraldine, and sister in law, Grace Wheeler.

In addition, Murl and Carl had a wonderful family of their own including two sons whom she loved dearly and who gave her two grandsons, two great grandsons, and three great granddaughters, all of whom she enjoyed spending time with. She is survived by her son, Gary Fields Banks and his wife, Anne Arnold Banks; her grandson Tre’ Tillman Banks and his wife, Carla Dee Banks, along with their children, Harrison Arnold and Carl Tillman Banks; her grandson, Zachary Neal Banks, and his wife, Jessica “Jessie” Garcia Banks, along with their daughters, London Guzman, Casslyn “Cassie”, and Lillian “Lily” Banks; and many nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl William Banks and her son, Barry Hunter Banks.
Murl spent the first 20 years of her marriage raising her two boys, and was involved in all their activities, PTA, Sunday school, Boy Scouts, band and even family camping. She always loved sewing and creating beautiful clothes and was always impeccably dressed. When she and Carl moved to Friendswood in 1971 with an empty nest, they bought “Buttons and Bows,” a small fabric store which she ran and later expanded adding Bernina sewing machines. She taught many classes for adults and children. When she retired and closed Buttons and Bows after 20 years, she was appointed Honorary Mayor of Friendswood for the day. She loved Friendswood and her church family at Friendswood United Methodist where she was a long-time member.

She was an avid Bridge player. She played regularly in several bridge clubs but with one in particular for over 40 years. She continued playing until her move to west Houston in February 2019. For those desiring, in lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Friendswood United Methodist Church for the Building Fund, 110 North Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas 77546 or to the charity of your choice.

A memorial service to honor her memory will be scheduled at a later date.
