On Saturday last Orlando Chapman of this village (Coudersport, PA) died from, as the Coroner's Jury find narcotic poison. The deseased had been a resident of this place for about two years and had lately been engaged in peeling bark for the tannery. Thursday evening he returned from the woods apparently in his usual health , ate his supper as usual and until some hours after was apparently well and feeling as well as any one would after working out in the woods all day. Friday morning about 3 o'clock his wife aroused one of the boarders to go for a doctor. At that time Mr. Chapman was unconscious and the whole system seemed paralyzed . No doctor could be obtained until about 8 o'clock when Dr. Post was secured. Afterwards Drs. Buck and Ellison visited the sick man but found him as stated and frothing at the mouth. No medicine was given as it was found to be impossible for the man to swallow, Mr. Chapman lingered until 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon , remaining uncouscious to the last.
The case seemed to demand legal investigation and L.B. Cole, esq, summoned a jury the same afternoon and a few witnesses were examined.
Orlando Chapman died July 10, 1880 in Coudersport in said county of congestion of the brain produced by an overdose of morphine, maliciously, wilfully and feloniously administered by Theresa Chapman , wife of Orlando Chapman.
The funeral of Mr. Chapman took place at 4 o'clock. The remains were followed to the grave by Leander Chapman of Harrison, a brother of the deseased and Daniel Chapman aged ten years the only child of the dead man as mourners.
