Ralph "Gene" Nelson died on January 23, 2020 in St. Peter, Minnesota. He was born on July 24, 1935, in Farmington, Illinois to Rachel and Ralph Nelson. He graduated high school in Farmington and graduated college at Western Illinois Universty where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity. He also attended Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois.

Gene married Betty Anne Barley on June 8, 1958. He was employed as Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Barber-Colman Company, Siebe Environmental Controls in Rockford for 38 years. He taught evening engineering classes at Rock Valley College in Rockford for several years. He was a member of Barbershop Quartets International and past president of Toastmaster International. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America during which time his son, Kurt attained Eagle Scout status. Gene was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Rockford for 52 years. He lived in Rockford and Roscoe, Illinois from 1961 to 2017 when he and Betty moved to St. Peter, Minnesota to be be closer to his son and family. Gene and Betty joined the Union Presbyterian Church in St. Peter in 2018.

Gene is survived by his wife, Betty, his son Kurt (Mary) Nelson, and grandchildren, Troy Nelson, Rachel Nelson, Reid Nelson and Ryan Nelson. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Evelyn Barley of LaCanada, California, nieces, Cassandra Diebolt, Rebecca Rench, Juliann (Kevin) Matthews, Kathy Dollye Hirtzer, Karen (John) Finnerty, Kristen (Mark) McKinney.

Predeceased by his sons, Craig Randall and Christopher Troy Nelson, his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline Bennett-McAfee and Robert Bennnett, nephew, James Bennett, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth and Delmer Rench.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 25, at the union Presbyterian Church, 730 South 3rd St. in St Peter, Minnesota 56082. A visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Pastor Andrew Davis will officiate. Memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church or Mayo Hospice or a charity of the donors choice.
