Son of Alexander Holmes, Newtownforbes, County Longford, Ireland. Member of Canadian Federal Parliament in 1867 - 1872.

in 1877 he inherited the home his brother George owned in Riccarton (Huntly). Huntly still stands at 67 Yaldhurst Road, across the motorway from the St Peter's Churchyard

Inscription

Sacred to the memory of John Holmes formerly of Huntley in the Dominion of Canada died at Riccarton on the 22nd day of Sept 1879 aged 51 years. This monument was erected by his affectionate wife Eliza.
