Mattie D. Turner was born January 28, 1935 in Fairfield, Alabama to the union of Mr. Marshall Black and Ms. Willie Lee Dudley and raised by her aunt and uncle, Johnny and Mary Nelson.

She married Alfred Davis and to this union four children were born: Esterlene, Angela, Clinton and Alfreda.

Mattie worked hard to support her family. She also earned a certificate in Social Work from Wayne State Community College.

After separation from Alfred Davis, years later she met and married Dr. Andrew Turner in Detroit, Michigan. They were inseparable for over 40 years. The couple enjoyed traveling for many years prior to settling in Georgetown, Texas where they were faithful members of Macedonia Baptist Church.

From childhood to adulthood, Mattie was an avid reader. As a result, she developed a natural talent to writing poetry. Her poems were a direct reflection of life experiences. In 2011, “The Crossroads”, a collection of over 200 original poems was published. She was so proud of her book. Her family and friends were happy that she was able to share her talent with the world.

Mattie continued to write and recite original poetry for special occasions.

When asked how her day was going, she would reply: “Every day I wake up and get up is a good day.”

After a beautiful and transformational life, Mattie journeyed home on April 1, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Andrew Turner, daughters, Esterlene Davis and Alfreda Norman; sisters Honey Dudley, Gloria Dudley and Odessa Dudley; brothers, Clifford Black and special sister, Mary Walker.

She leaves to cherish her memories, son, Clinton Davis, Detroit, Michigan and daughter, Angela Pikes, Missouri; brother, Benjamin Coleman (Hazel); 17 grandchildren and faithful caretaker, Melba Nichols.

A private burial will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

“To yourself always be true
In all the things you attempt to do
To attempt a feat and render less
Will not produce your very best…”
