Geraldine "Gerri" Phillips
July 12, 1927 - March 30, 2020

Geraldine Ione Gipson (Gerri) Phillips died Mar. 30, 2020 from complications due to Covid-19. Born in Durant, OK to Martha Ione Nichols Gipson and John W. Gipson, she was raised in Bokchito, Oklahoma. Her mother died from TB when Gerri was 4. Later, her father married her mother's sister, Lillian Pearl Nichols, who raised Gerri as her daughter.

After graduation from Bokchito High School the family moved to McAlester, OK, where Gerri and her father worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot.

In McAlester, Gerri met and fell in love with Grover C. Phillips Jr. She was attending Oklahoma University but Grover didn't have much trouble convincing her to transfer to Oklahoma A&M, where he was attending. They married June 20, 1948. After 60 years of marriage he preceded her in death on September 25, 2008.

The couple had 3 children: Martha Ione 'Marti', Carla Fay, and Grover C. 'Cleve' Phillips III. After Grover found his heart’s career in Chamber of Commerce work, he took Gerri and the family to a number of different Ok cities, starting in Antlers, moving to El Reno, then Wichita Falls, TX and settling in Midwest City, OK in 1966. After many years with the MWC Chamber of Commerce, Grover went to work with the Okla. Dept. of Economic Development. After Grover retired from the state, Gerri enjoyed working with him in his new career in real estate, first with Tinker Country Realtors and then for Prudential Alliance Realty in Midwest City.

Gerri loved being a homemaker, raising their 3 children, and being involved in all their school activities. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Midwest City. She was also active in a number of clubs: Christian Women's Club, Welcome Wagon, Eastern Star, Rotary Ann, Wildflower Garden Club, Premier Reviewers Book Club and a number of bridge clubs.

Grover and Gerri loved playing bridge for many years and being part of the Eastwood Neighborhood Association since 1975. They also loved attending Grover's WW II USS Gambier Bay ship reunions as often as possible.

She is survived by Marti and Steve Blackwood, who lived with her the last 5 years of her life; Carla and Alan Swarts; and Cleve and Ellie Phillips, all of Midwest City. Grandchildren include Richard (Amy) Blackwood, Jeffery (Sarah) Blackwood, and Phillip (Faith) Blackwood; Jared McClure, Sarah Ann (Kye) LeBeouf, David Swarts, Monica Paige Porterfield; Brandi Doerr and Robyn Phillips; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held and a memorial service is planned for a later date.
