CoronaVirus Victim (COVID-19)

The grandmother of a New Jersey mayor died from coronavirus just hours after testing positive for the disease.

Penns Grove Mayor LaDaena Thomas announced Saturday that her 86-year-old grandmother, Sallie Jones, of Long Beach, California, died earlier that morning from the virus at a nursing home where she had been treated for more than a week.

“She suddenly came down with pneumonia, vomiting, and had trouble breathing,” Thomas wrote on Facebook. “She was transported to a hospital near the facility. She tested positive for the virus. 5 hours later she was gone. My family and I are devastated.”

Thomas, an independent who took office in January, urged others to “take this virus seriously” and to follow stay-at-home mandates unless absolutely necessary.

“I never expected this virus to hit so close to home,” Thomas’ post continued. “I am speechless. Please be safe and follow ALL safety precautions.”

Jones had a seizure three weeks ago, but had stabilized after being admitted to a hospital. She was later diagnosed with a tumor and was transferred to a nursing home facility, Thomas said.

“She was doing fine and then all of a sudden, Friday we got a call that she couldn’t breathe,” Thomas told The Post. “So I told the nurse you need to get her tested for the COVID-19 virus.”

Just hours later, Thomas learned early Saturday that her grandmother had passed away, she said.

“It’s just shocking for us, we did not expect that to happen,” Thomas continued. “We’re just devastated and to have her taken away from us this abruptly is so heartbreaking.”

Jones’ husband of more than 70 years, Samuel Jones, has not been tested for the illness because he had not been around his wife for the past three weeks, Thomas said. She urged others to not assume that their loved ones would be safe from contracting the deadly virus.

“I want to encourage people to take this very seriously,” Thomas said. “I did not expect it to hit my family — I don’t think anyone does, but you can never be too safe.”

Jones contracted the coronavirus at the Country Villa Belmont Heights Healthcare Center in Long Beach, where she was waiting before she could receive chemotherapy for a cancerous lump in her throat. The center has reported three positive patient cases and nine worker cases. Jones is the only known death.

Jones is survived by her husband, Sam, daughter Ernie, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
