Chloe’s story

Early spring of 2004, a tiny tortoise shell mother brought her family of 2 babies to our house, a gray female and black male. Surprisingly enough, another family of 3 babies came to our house that same year, and we had too many to take care of, even if they remained outside. My step father-in-law had just lost his wife the year before and he agreed to take both kitties, the gray and black cats if we had them neutered and declawed all fours. We agreed to do that with the condition that if he ever decided to get rid of them, he would give us the opportunity to take them back first. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened.

Probably just as well. I heard he kept them in the basement and rarely spent any time with them. The few times we went over there, the black cat would dart in the spare bedroom and hide under the bed, clearly not socialized yet, the gray cat was super happy to see anyone, but sadly, he had not named either one of them.

I don’t remember when we took them back, but it was shortly before the stepfather-in-law remarried. The tv show 24 was popular at that time so we named them Chloe and Jack.

Chloe was super sweet. She would sit on your chest and take her paws and touch you on your face. A gentle cat, she was content just to sit on your lap, especially if you were in a comfy chair with a blanket, she would quickly jump up and try to claim a spot. Always a good cat, using the litter box and causing no problems whatsoever. Her good nature and lack of claws also made her a target of some of our bully cats that would take advantage of her being a sweet and docile cat. One of Chloe’s habits, that I will never forget, is that she would often sit close by and wait for me to clean the litter boxes, and when clean, she would get in, use it, hop out, and run as fast as she could to the other end of the house. I’m assuming this was probably a result of her having, an often dirty litter box at her previous residence.

The last few months we have been letting Chloe sleep with us; she always felt special when she could be in the bedroom without having any other cats around, where she knew she was safe.

We took Chloe in for a checkup for weight loss and a blood panel, and found she had some bad teeth and required thyroid medicine. She was scheduled for surgery and during surgery, the vet found a large area in her upper right jaw that he felt 95% sure was cancerous; we made the difficult decision to let her go.

Now she can join her mama and brother over the rainbow bridge.

You will be missed sweet Chloe!
