John Smith Spalding, 89, died Saturday at his home at 508 N Oak in Eldon. A
retired bridge and building construction employee of the Rock Island railroad,
Mr. Spalding was born Sept. 5, 1876, at Eugene, to William and Jane (Rush)
Spalding. Mr. Spalding was a member of Modern Woodmen of America.
On August 5, 1898, he married Emma Ekstam, who died last December 25.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Marie Crum and Mrs. Marjorie Houston, both of
Eldon and Mrs. Sylvia Jones of Eldon and Mrs. Opal Larkin of Jonesboro, Ark.;
two brothers, Ford Spalding of Eugene and James Spalding of Windsor; six
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, with
the Rev. A. L. Alexander officiating. Burial was in Eldon Cemetery under
direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon
