After the death of her first husband before their fourth anniversary Jennie was forced to work. Jennie was a hard worker. She stripped tobacco in Janesville and picked hops in Farmington and did what work she could find. Jennie had to place her daughter Lillian, first with her parents and later with her unmarried sister Bertha Riess.
In 1901 Jennie stayed with her brother-in-law Carl Gruennert and wife Emma. Emma was terminally ill with cancer and needed help with house work and the four children: Sophia born 9 December 1889 in Farmington; Carl born 14 November 1891 in Jefferson, Alma born 9 July 1893, and Irwin, born 29 September 1898. Emma died 10 December 1901.
In 1904 Jennie married her brother-in-law Charlie Gruennert.
Jennie liked to have the words to hymns read to her after she could no longer read them for herself. She liked to have them read to her in German which her daughter Lillie could do.
