Kathryn was born to immigrant parents Emmanuel and Kathryn (Fleck) Hartman on Nov. 17, 1929, and grew up in a farming community in North Dakota. In 1964, her family settled in Sacramento, Calif., where she lived until the time of her passing. She will best be remembered as a person who truly enjoyed life, danced a mean jitterbug, was an exceptionally good cook, loved without reservation, and allowed God to guide her through this life and into the next.
Kathryn is survived by her soul mate and devoted husband of 56 years, Edward Schmalz. She leaves behind a legacy of love and selfless dedication to her family and her Catholic faith, which will live on in her seven children, Kenneth (Linda) Schmalz, Keith (Cynthia) Schmalz, Jeannine (Peter) deVries, Kevin (Tammi) Schmalz, Angela (Scott) McCabe, Paula (Adin) Selby and Kathryn (Joey) Stengell; her beloved nephew, Paul (Diane) Schmalz; her 15 grandchildren, Shanda, Erin, Trisha, Majique, Lyndsie, Courtney, Jessica, Justin, Tyler, Kaitlin, Christie, Taryn, Sean, Mary and Elizabeth; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Jordan, Phoenix, Nicholas and Noel. She also is survived by countless others to whom she opened her home and heart, and the many who came to call her "Mom" throughout her life.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her grandson, Nicholas Schmalz; and her son-in-law, Johnny Ladnier.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nicholas Schmalz Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Appleton Area School District, P.O. Box 2019, Appleton, Wis. 54912. (Elk Grove Funeral Home)
