Born Aug. 30, 1914, to Albert and Harriett McKellar. Graduate of Michigan State University School of Journalism. U.S. Navy 1943-1946. Career with The Dow Chemical Co. as Editor of Dow Diamond and Elements, Director of Advertising and Public Relations (Dow Latin America) and Director of News and Information.
He and Joanne shared a deep love for travel and together they explored the people and cultures of the world. His fascination and curiosity for other cultures is reflected in the writing he completed as a freelance journalist during their travels. He especially loved the sights, smells and warm, rich culture of Mexico. He and Joanne were fully embraced as friends by the community of San Miguel de Allende, where they wintered for 13 years.
He was a progressive, independent thinker who was not easily swayed by prevailing attitudes or ideology. He was steadfastly committed to what was right and what was fair. He guided his family with humor and a love that was non-judgmental and always unconditional. His passion for equality and deep commitment to kindness has made an indelible impression on all who knew him.
His family is especially grateful for the loving and patient care he received from all of the attendants at Nottingham Place over the last two years, with special acknowledgments to Diane Barnhart, Krista Strickling, Sue Newman, Leslie Inglis, Roseta Alvord, Chris Reist, Lonny Ayres and the entire staff of Southern Care Hospice.
A Memorial Service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, from the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. The Reverend David Young will officiate. Mr. McKellar's family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service.
