Philip Silger

After thirteen years of suffering with rheumatism and other complications which twisted his feet, hands and knees, to render him helpless for the past five years, Philip Silger passed away at 6:30 p.m. on May 23rd, at his home at Grandin.

He was born on a farm near Freelandville, Ind., on March 12, 1848. At the time of his death he was 76 years two months and eleven days old. He remained on the farm with his parents until the age of 23 years when he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Endmeyer of Edwardsport, Indiana.

Within one week after their marriage they came to Carter County, Missouri and after living at White's Mill and other places for ten years, they bought a farm on Ten Mile where they lived for 37 years. After he became unable to work on the farm he sold it and moved to Grandin and lived at this place for five years.

After coming to Missouri, he, with his wife, united with the Methodist church in which they remained continuously until his death.

Rev. Stewart conducted the funeral services at Grandin M. E. church. He delivered a beautiful sermon, dwelling upon the great lesson he had learned of patience and faith he could see Mr. Silger had during his visits with him. Mr. Silger had many friends to visit him during his illness and not one failed to notice his patience and never uttering a word of complaint.

Mr. and Mrs. Silger spent 52 years and 2 months of wedded life together and to this union ten children were born, five having preceded him in death. The widow and five daughters survive. The daughters are Mrs. John McDermott of Grandin, Mrs. Alfred Raut of Edwardsville, Illinois, Mrs. G. E. Turner of Canton, Mississippi, Mrs. E. C. Winsor of Homing, Oklahoma and Mrs. Louis Bedell of Springfield, Missouri.

There are also five grandsons, 3 granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter, also two brothers near Centralia, Illinois.
There were many who attended the funeral in Grandin, there at the Joplin cemetery on Ten Mile, near his old home, where he was laid to rest, the entire neighborhood of old friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last respects to him.

The floral offerings from local friends were numerous, also many beautiful flowers sent from friends in other towns.
All of his daughters were with him during his last illness.
A patient, quiet and good man is gone to make his home with those of his kind.
