Sally Carter died at Cedarhust, the plantation-style home built in 1823 by some of Stephen Ewing. Sally had been visiting her sister at Cedarhurst when she died in an upstairs bedroom after a brief illness.

In December 1982, Carter's grave, along with the graves of her sister, Mary Ewing, and Ewing's three children were excavated when the town-home development began. When the graves were moved to Maple Hill Cemetery, the family did not disclose the new location of Carter's grave.
