Earlene Hawkins Muirbrook
1938 - 2020

Early Life: Earlene was born April 18, 1938, in Provo, Utah, to Orson Earl and Ruby West Hawkins. She was lucky enough to have four wonderful brothers. Earlene was a good student who loved ballet and basketball. She graduated from Provo High School and went straight to Brigham Young University where she graduated early with bachelor's degree in education.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: She met handsome, brainy Newell K. Muirbrook from Ogden, Utah, while he was home from Yale. They married March 25, 1959, in the Salt Lake Temple after they both graduated from college. They returned to Yale where Newell had a year's teaching appointment before moving to Berkeley, California, for his PhD. While in Berkley, Earlene taught elementary school in Oakland until Melanie was born. Upon completion of his PhD, Newell obtained a job as a chemical engineer with Esso Standard Oil/Exxon, which became his career. Exxon took the Muirbrooks to New Jersey, where Wendy was born, and then Libya, where Earlene and Newell began their love of travel and adventure.
❦ Earlene loved traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East, but especially loved Egypt and was proud to be among the few families to have the opportunity to enter the tombs inside the great pyramids in Cairo. Earlene was also very proud to have eaten fire roasted grubs with the aborigines in Australia on one of her adventures and dreamed of being able to retire to New Zealand.
❦ The Muirbrooks returned to New Jersey, after five years overseas, when Newell became ill. She had to take over managing his health care and raising the family. During a remission from his autoimmune based illness, they were blessed to have Jeanne Muirbrook Boulware and finished adding to their family.
❦ In 1986, Newell took early retirement from Exxon and the family moved to Provo, Utah, where Earlene took over running a family business of BYU off-campus housing apartments. In 1989, Newell died suddenly after suffering for years from the pain of a degenerative illness.
❦ Following his death, Earlene joined a bowling league and began traveling with some other young widows. She took up piano lessons, horseback riding lessons, and continued to attend plays with her friends and daughters. She was very comforted by her pets and has had several beloved small dogs throughout her life.
❦ As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Earlene taught Junior Sunday School, taught early morning seminary, was ward librarian, and produced years of a comprehensive and funny ward newsletter. She also ran a Girl Scout troop and was much loved by the girls.
❦ Her last big adventure was a road trip with her best buddy, Marsha, to North Dakota, completing her goal to have visited every state in the United States. She was also very proud to have been to all continents in her travels except Antarctica, and was still trying to find a way to get there shortly before her death. Earlene had many health challenges during her last few years of life, but was feeling great and ready for discharge from a two-day hospital stay, when things suddenly changed. Her passing was too quick and unexpected for family to get to her, but she had excellent care by Mountain View Hospital staff. Earlene Hawkins Muirbrook passed unexpectedly on March 17, 2020. She was 81.
Family Message: Earlene spent the last year of her life in Legacy House Assisted Living of Spanish Fork. She received exceptional care from home health nurses, Kelly, Kim, and bus driver and true friend, Ted. She loved to hear the stories of the care staff there, and the family so appreciate the kindness and support of all the staff that worked with her. Earlene's brothers and their wives were so good to visit, take her to lunch, and call frequently to keep Earlene in a positive frame of mind. Clyde and Lorraine Hawkins have been such an extra blessing to Earlene and her daughters by helping transport Earlene to and from her myriad of doctor and hospital appointments, and helping with questions and problems regarding her family business and care of her home and also were so kind as to take her with their family on a cruise to Alaska.
Survived By: Her three daughters: Melanie Muirbrook, Wendy Muirbrook, Jeanne Muirbrook Boulware (Jason); four brothers: Gordon Hawkins (Julie), Lloyd Hawkins (Beverly), Clyde Hawkins (Lorraine), and Reed Hawkins; five grandchildren: Kyra Nicole Muirbrook Fallon, Tyler Jason Boulware, Eric Knight Boulware, Brooke Renee Boulware, Connor Robert Boulware; and beloved pets, Weejie and Gizmo.
