School bus accident claims Dover man, 71

A collision with a school bus claimed the life of a Dover man Monday afternoon. The accident occurred about 3:15 p.m. Monday on Dover-Kenton Road just north of Dover. According to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Haiinan Blades, the school bus was stopped in the southbound lane unloading three children from Capital School District, when it was struck from behind by a 1993 Ford Escort driven by Wilson C. Carney, 71, of 5399 Pearson's Corner Road.

"He apparently didn't see the bus, he didn't see that it was stopped," Cpl. Blades said. Mr. Carney was taken to Kent General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There were no skid marks on the pavement. Investigators estimate the bus was moved about 15 feet by the impact. Neither the bus driver nor the children were injured, Cpl. Blades said.

"There were only three kids on the bus, and they all got off here," he said. "And the one who had to cross the road (to get home) hadn't started yet, fortunately."

Mr. Carney was the 79th person to die on Delaware roadways this year, compared to 78 traffic deaths at the same time in 1994.
