Steven R. Cox, of Clarksville, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

He was 75 years old, and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Clark County YMCA.

Steven was born in Madison, Wisconsin, to the late Richard and Sue Cox. Along with his parents, Steven is preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Healy.

Steven attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received his bachelor’s degree, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he received his master’s and doctoral degrees in economics. Steven’s entire career was as a college professor, first as a tenured economics professor at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and later as a tenured professor and chair of the economics department at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. He loved teaching, and maintained friendships with many of his colleagues long after his retirement and mentoring relationships with some of his students long after they graduated.

Aside from teaching (which continued unofficially even into his retirement—just ask any of his children or grandchildren), Steven enjoyed playing cards with family, friends, and neighbors; baking and cooking his own fine foods at home, especially making homemade ice cream (peach was his favorite) and jam (strawberry was his favorite) from fruit he picked himself; eating magnificent meals and delicious desserts out at restaurants; drinking more than his share of the sweeter side of Starbucks; finding hidden and forgotten gems at garage sales; and all along the way sharing his thoughts and visiting with anyone and everyone. In retirement, Steven’s standing weekly schedule included a neighborhood card game every Friday night, visits to the Clark County YMCA, and shopping—oh, did he love to shop, especially sales, whether that was with the weekly circular at a local grocery store while everyone else was at work, or among the mobs lined up for a blowout at a department store on a holiday. Steven’s greatest joys in life were being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 50 years, Carol, and two sons, Reid and Mark (married to Courtney), as well as two grandchildren, Gallagher and Milli.

Steven’s desire was to be cremated, and his family has scheduled no public memorial services.
