George William Thomas Stuart Newman, Sr. 86, husband of Thelma A. Newman, of Staunton, entered eternal rest with the Lord, Thursday, February 20, 2020 at his residence.

Mr. Newman was born in Staunton on August 11, 1933, a son of the late Francisco Beale Newman, Sr. and Lucille Virginia (Miller) Newman.

George was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served many years as the church sexton. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and was a generous supporter and member of the Booker T. Washington Alumni Association. George retired after 37 years with American Safety Razor, as a millwright. Mr. Newman served in the United States Navy and earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, with 30 years of service, both as active duty and as a reservist. He loved the outdoors and yardwork and was an “environmental specialist” when it came to recycling, along with helping his youngest son with his General Contracting business. George loved his pets, including “Diva” and “Ebony.”

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin D. Newman.

Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-three years are his children, George W. Newman, Jr., Kathy Y. Newman, and Thomas K. Newman and special friend Anne M. Johnston, and grandson, Tyler A. K. Newman, all of Staunton; a brother, Francisco B. Newman, Jr. of Oxford, North Carolina; a sister, Bernice E. Dandridge of Pacheco, California; an aunt, Mary Frances Phillips of Coolidge, Texas; an uncle, Lewis M. Vaughn of Staunton, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Thelma N. Moats of Oxford, North Carolina, Francis G. Newman of Garner, North Carolina, and Charlotte A. Gordon of Wilmington, Delaware; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 27, 2020 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

A Celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2020 in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Staunton.

Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
