Clarence William Dellinger, 92, went to his savior on Wednesday morning, April 3, 2013, from the home of his granddaughter, Pam, and her husband, Kenny, in Keezletown.

Clarence was born on July 15, 1920, to Martha and Noah Dellinger in Timberville and moved to Keezletown in 1943.

Clarence was a fixture in downtown Harrisonburg for 50 years, selling plants and organic vegetables, first at the police station before the parking deck was built and was a founding member of the current Farmers Market located at Turner Pavilion.

His love of gardening began at a young age helping his mother in the garden when it was considered woman's work and became a lifelong passion of experimenting with different varieties and methods of growing organically. This led him to be one of the first in the state to be certified as an organic grower. He loved to share his knowledge along with his love of the Lord.

Clarence was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines and Japan.

On June 30, 1939, he married Reba Brown, who preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2003. Two sons, Wayne and David, also preceded him.

Surviving are seven children, Allen, Jim and Winona, all of Harrisonburg, Jack and his wife, Sue, of Polkton, N.C., John and his wife, Tonya, of Gulfport, Miss., Donnie and his wife, Gwen, of Keezletown and Ronnie and his wife, Elaine, of Mathias, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters, Betty Louise Dellinger Ryan of Richmond, Va., Mary Frances Dellinger Billhimer of Pasadena, Md., Helen Elizabeth Dellinger Showalter of Harrisonburg, and Ruby Ellen Dellinger Derrer of Staunton; and three brothers, Nora Calvin Dellinger of Oroville, Calif., William Franklin Dellinger of Edinburg, Va., and Carroll Lee Dellinger of Mount Jackson. Clarence was preceded in death by three brothers, Galen Joseph Dellinger, Leroy Allen Dellinger and Stanley Thomas Dellinger; and three sisters, Edna Arlene Dellinger Lantz, Marie Dellinger Crider Godlove and Delia Mae Dellinger Crider.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Keezletown Cemetery with military rites by the Dayton American Legion Post No. 27.

Clarence gave his life to the Lord at a young age and at 16, wrote down 10 principles that guided his life with honesty, fairness and integrity in his relationship and his business. He served as a model on what it meant to have a growing relationship with the Lord and he passed it on to his family and everyone he met. He will be greatly missed.
