US Soldier killed at the Fetterman Massacre. Metzger was the bugler for Company C, 2nd US Cavalry Regiment. Metzger was the company bugler. Reports from burial parties, after the fighting, indicated all of the soldiers had been mutilated, except Metzger. His body was reportedly covered with a buffalo robe with his battered bugle found nearby. It is believed that Metzger had fought so bravely the Lakota Warriors honored him by the buffalo robe and not mutilating his body. Soldiers who died with Fetterman were first buried at Ft Phil Kearny. After the fort closed, post burials were moved to the Custer Nat'l Cemetery. Fetterman's men were buried in graves numbered 15-49 & 108-144.Bugler; "C" Co., 2nd U.S. Cav.
