Rachel Gray Hughes, age 85, of 103 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020 at her home. Born on May 26, 1934 in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Nelson Holmes Gray and Edna Louise Old Gray, she was an only child and was principally raised in South Mills, NC (Camden County) . Her mother passed away when she was 12 years of age and she was raised by her grandmother and various aunts and uncles in many loving homes which left her with wonderful memories. In May of 1952 she married the late Adren John Hughes, Sr. in Camden County, NC and the marriage was later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1962.

Rachel is known for her many acts of service and was extremely active in her faith. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many positions. If there was ever anyone in need, she was there willing and offering to help and usually showed up with a tray full of homemade fudge. She loved serving with young women, the relief society, primary, and in the Cub Scout program for many years.

Her children have great memories of all of the young GIs in their home on Sundays as she would feed them all dinner, as well as the many that were at their home for the Christmas holidays over the years. She had boundless energy and loved to serve and help others. She also served as a Nurse for many years at Albemarle Hospital. She was a great example to all and will be sorely missed.

Rachel is survived by her sons, Adren John Hughes Jr. (Kathleen Willis) of Boston, MA, Eddy Wade Hughes of Elizabeth City, NC, and James Paul Hughes (RoseAnn) of Filer, ID; daughter, Tammy Hughes Raymond (Rick) of Idaho Falls, ID; two sisters-in-law Helen Hughes and Ruby Ainsley; 25 grandchildren; and 33 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Adren; daughters, Paula Louise Hughes, Vivian Margaret Hughes, and Tanya Hughes Yoder; and two great grand children, Mia Rose Trease and Lena May England.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, February 21, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 605 West Eringhaus St. in Elizabeth City, with Bishop Anthony Trotman officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the church, and at other times at the residence.
