ADREN J. HUGHES, SR., 76, of 103 Jessup St, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Hertford, NC, he was the son of the late George Wallace Hughes, and Julia Margarett Trueblood, and was the husband of Rachel Gray Hughes of the home. Adren enlisted into the Army in June of 1955 and served 20 years, retiring as a Major in 1975. During his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many leadership positions.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, Adren is survived by his sons, Adren (Kathleen Willis) John Hughes Jr. of Phoenix AZ, Eddy Wade Hughes of Sligo NC, and James (RoseAnn) Paul Hughes of Twin Falls ID; daughter, Tammy (Rick) Hughes Raymond of San Diego CA; sister, Fay Randolf, 25 Grandchildren, and 7 Great Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughters, Paula Louise Hughes, Vivian Margarett Hughes, and Tanya Hughes Yoder[see 19308746]; his brother Julian Wallace Hughes [see 91360947], Charlie Lee Hughes and sisters Ivor McDonald [see 3784764] and Sarah Marie Hurdle-Banks [see 87243364].
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, 605 West Eringhaus St. in Elizabeth City, with Bishop John Frank Weeks officiating.
