Ex-schoolmates have fatal reunion on country road
Two young Monroeville men were killed in a head on collision yesterday on a rural east Allen County road, and an Ohio man died in a one car accident on U.S. 33 north of Churubusco.
Kurt P. Howard, 20, of the 300 block of Mulberry Street was driving west in the 18000 block of Monroeville Road near Whittern Road, when he tried to pass another car and struck a car traveling east, county police said.
The accident happened at 10:10 a.m. Howard died at the scene.
The other driver, Daniel L. Doctor, 22, of the 13000 block of Grotrian Road in Monroeville, also died at the scene. Police said neither was wearing a seat belt.
Staci Howard, the 22 year old sister of Kurt Howard, said, "Kurt knew Danny (Doctor).....Kurt and Danny went to (Heritage) high school together."
During high school, they met each other at parties, she said, "Danny was fun. Danny was rowdy. He was fun, like Kurt."
Her brother had a lot of friends, Staci Howard said, noting that he wanted to be a country musician.
Kurt Howard was a 1985 Heritage graduate.
Doctor, a lifelong resident of Monroeville, was a heavy equipment operator for his grandfather's construction company, Robert Marquardt Construction Inc. and a 1984 Heritage graduate.

The 1985 Heritage High School graduate was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, a Monroeville native and a musician, who played the bass guitar.
Surviving are his parents, Barbara J. and Stephen R.; sisters, Stacie J. and Brett A.; a brother, Matthew W. and a grandmother, Rhoda Parker, all of Monroeville.
Services are 10:10 a.m. tomorrow in Marquart & Jacobs Funeral Home, Monroeville and 11 a.m. in the church. Calling is 1 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are gifts to Monroeville Fire Department building fund or the church.
